Why being involved in a dispute can be bad for your health and wellbeing

When our mediators talk to the parties involved in a dispute, people will often mention how stressful they are finding the situation. The impacts of conflict on mental health and stress levels are often underestimated, but they are very real and potentially damaging.

Being embroiled in a dispute with a person or organisation can be incredibly draining and detrimental to our overall wellbeing. When we find ourselves in conflict, whether in our personal or professional lives, it can consume our thoughts and emotions, leading to increased stress and anxiety. These negative emotions then have a domino effect on our mental health, possibly affecting our ability to focus, sleep, and make rational decisions.

The toll that disputes take on our mental health should not be underestimated.  Not only do disputes affect our mental health, but they also have a direct impact on our stress levels. When we are engaged in a dispute, the constant back-and-forth, the uncertainty and the fear of the unknown all contribute to heightened stress levels. Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on our physical health as well, leading to headaches, muscle tension, and even more serious conditions such as high blood pressure or heart problems. The toll that disputes take on our stress levels can be both immediate and long-lasting.

Addressing disputes promptly and effectively is crucial, not only for resolving the conflict itself but also for protecting our mental health and wellbeing. Seeking professional help, such as engaging a mediator, can provide support and assistance in navigating these challenging situations. Developing healthy coping mechanisms and stress management techniques can also be beneficial in alleviating the emotional burden caused by disputes. By taking proactive steps towards resolution and self-care, we can minimise the costs and impacts that disputes have on our mental and physical health.

In conclusion, disputes have far-reaching costs and impacts that extend beyond financial or legal implications. Our mental health and overall wellbeing are also at stake when we find ourselves caught in ongoing conflicts. The stress levels caused by disputes can be overwhelming and can have profound effects on various aspects of our lives. Recognising the importance of addressing and resolving disputes promptly is crucial for protecting our mental health and minimising the negative consequences they can bring.
